In all our time at Oakmont, many things came and went. Around our sophomore and junior years, a trend of people creating and running unofficial school Instagram accounts was huge, and Oakmont had quite a few of these accounts pop up.
Behind some of the largest unofficial Oakmont accounts was Senior Logan McAndrew. McAndrew ran the Oakmont Sleeping account anonymously for its entire existence. He says he saw the trend on TikTok and thought that it would be funny, so he used it for Oakmont.
This account featured submitted pictures of students sleeping in class. McAndrew said that the Oakmont Sleeping account lasted from Nov.17, 2021 to March 2022, and at the height of its following had around 550 followers.
One of the things McAndrew learned while running this account was the names and faces of many people he didn’t know went to Oakmont, as he was getting submissions from and of people he had never met.
McAndrew kept his identity mostly private, only sharing that he ran the account with a handful of friends. He knew people who ran some of the other accounts but they all graduated with the Class of 2023.
McAndrew’s favorite account he ran during the trend was OHS Lackx, a page showing people “lacking,” or doing embarrassing things around school. Another Instagram page he was fond of was OHS Side Profile, where, as the name suggests, side profiles of students and staff were posted.
McAndrew stated that, unlike other accounts during this trend, the pages he ran did not get forcefully taken down. He took it down once the trend died down, but a school wide email was sent to students telling them not to make these accounts as a result of OHS Sleeping.
“Overall it was a fun trend and I started it at Oakmont, but it got out of hand at the end,” McAndrew said.
