In New York ,in a spectacular display at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sep. 7, 2025, Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to claim his second US Open men’s singles title and his sixth career Grand Slam title. The Spaniard’s victory also marked his return to the world No. 1 ranking, ending Sinner’s 65-week hold on the top spot.
Alcaraz took control early, breaking Sinner in the opening game, and dominating the first set with aggressive forehands and precise serves. Sinner bounced back in the second set, finding rhythm in baseline rallies and leveling the match thanks to consistent pressure and no mistakes.
However, Alcaraz stormed back in the third set, racing ahead and hitting a flurry of winners. He displayed greater control over his serve and minimized unforced mistakes.
In the fourth set, a late break gave Alcaraz the edge, which he held onto, despite a late push from Sinner. The final match time was about 3 hours.
Statistically, Alcaraz outdid Sinner in nearly all important categories: the number of winners, (42 to 21, twice as much), aces, and most importantly”,” he lost every service game across the tournament.
This win is more than just another trophy for Alcaraz. It solidifies his status at the top of the tennis world of rankings. Also, it deepens his rivalry with Sinner, who has now lost in three Grand Slam finals this season to Alcaraz. For Sinner, despite the loss, the run to four major finals in one year cements him as one of the strongest players of the current generation and maybe even top 10 all time ”in my opinion.”
Alcaraz, visibly moved during the trophy ceremony, credited his team, mental toughness, and desire to improve. As he lifted the US Open trophy, he also reclaimed world No. 1- a double achievement that caps off a dominant season.
