Taylor Swift’s 10th and newest studio album, “Midnights,” was released on Oct. 21.  The album was reminiscent of most of her old albums such as “1989,” “Lover,” “Reputation,” and “Folklore,” but not so much as far as the good songs go because the new album doesn’t convey the type of emotion that she had in her old albums..

The first track on the album, “Lavender Haze,” is a hyped up song that did not live up to the expectations. Best explained as the song that would be played in a Forever 21 store, the music was like how a candy shop feels. The lyrics are very repetitive and lack the lyricism that Taylor Swift is known for.

The songs after “Lavender Haze” get good for a while.

The second song, “Maroon” was so good. The beat of the song went along with the lyrics so well, and evoked the same type of emotion as a song from her previous album, “Dress.” Swift talks about how the person that she wrote the song about still keeps her up at night sometimes, like a person you can never let go of, even though they were the most horrible person you’ve ever met; best seen in the lyrics “And I wake with your memory over me / That’s a real f****** legacy, legacy (It was maroon) / And I wake with your memory over me / That’s a real f****** legacy to leave.” This was a great song on the new album.

Tracks like “Anti-Hero” and “You’re On Your Own, Kid” are filled with Swift’s own worst insecurities. In “Anti-Hero,” she sings about her problems with an eating disorder which she talked about earlier in her documentary “Miss Americana.” Then in track five, “You’re On Your Own, Kid,” she talks about how she learns self-reliance as she grows up and learns how she doesn’t need to rely on love.

The song “Snow On The Beach” has big-name feature Lana Del Rey and has been one of the most promoted songs on the album. While Lana Del Rey did not get a huge part in the song, the backing vocals with her and Swift made the song sound magical and gave off a beautiful vibe, making it the best track on the album.

“Midnight Rain” had the most eccentric intro, in which her voice deepened and slowed down, which a lot of people had mixed feelings about. After the beginning, the song redeems itself and has meaningful lyrics which go very well with the backing vocals.

This was one of the things that if you give it a second chance, it might be one of the best things that you have ever known.

Songs like “Karma,” “Sweet Nothing,” “Bejeweled,” and “Question…?” were good, but got slightly repetitive at parts, and the lyricism was a bit weak –  which doesn’t necessarily mean that the songs were bad.

Saving the best songs for last, “Vigilante S***,” “Labyrinth,” and “Mastermind” were some of the best songs in Taylor Swift’s whole discography, maybe because it prevails on people’s emotions.

Overall, the album was a hit or miss, but the songs that were good make up for the ones that weren’t. Though people’s opinions on the new album vary, Swift still continues to break new records and have much success.
