On the evening of Aug. 8, former President Donald Trump issued a statement confirming that the FBI had executed a search warrant on the Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach.

“These are dark times for our Nation, as my beautiful home, Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents,” Trump said. “After working and cooperating with the relevant Government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was not necessary or appropriate.”

In the lengthy statement – which can be read in the tweet below – the former president noted that the agents “even broke into” a safe. He also compared the raid to both Watergate and a witch hunt.

It’s unclear at this point what the search warrant was in regards to, but it comes as the Department of Justice  continues to investigate the insurrection at the US Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. It’s unclear if this raid is related to said investigation. The FBI has yet to comment on the matter.

“The search, according to two people familiar with the investigation, appeared to be focused on material that Mr. Trump had brought with him to Mar-a-Lago, his private club and residence, after he left the White House. Those boxes contained many pages of classified documents, according to a person familiar with their contents,” Per the New York Times.

According to the Times, the raid took place on Monday morning.

Trump is currently not on the Mar-a-Lago property, which he called his “winter White House.” He typically spends his summers at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in New Jersey.

Earlier this summer, Trump confirmed that he plans to run for President again.

“I’ve already made that decision,” he told New York Magazine, but he has yet to formally announce his candidacy.
