With the upcoming AP and IB tests, many students are starting to stress over studying and trying to remember what they learned throughout the year. However, with the new study sessions appearing at Odin’s Eye for these more difficult classes, working together with peers may remove some of the stress for students.
Odin’s Eye is a free after-school tutoring program that happens every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, starting from the end of school and lasting an hour. It is led by Oakmont staff members Raisa Wyant and Kary Martinez, and is located in room M-1, between the cafeteria and the student government classes.
AP classes will, most of the time, have review sessions to jog students’ memories of what they learned previously. Unfortunately, these sessions are exclusive, and if students do not have time to attend, they’ll miss the review.
These Odin’s Eye study sessions give students some flexibility in time management because they’re student-led, allowing students to study as they need, no matter how fast or slow they learn.
Another positive of these study sessions is how students can learn better by reteaching information. The protege effect explains that by teaching someone information, a person can learn that information better because of how they can organize and simplify their thoughts for another person.
These sessions also allow students to filter out what things may or may not be necessary in topics by convening with their peers to narrow down what they study, so they don’t have to study everything they’ve done in one month at once.
Another reason, and arguably the most important reason, is that these study sessions help students prepare for college. College often gives students many things to study at once, so study sessions often become a necessity. Learning these skills for success at an earlier age often yields better results for the future, where students will already have experience with the subject.
This doesn’t mean that if you don’t go to the study sessions, you won’t be successful in the future, but rather that these can help you feel more confident in your abilities and what you learned.
The study sessions are in no way mandatory, but they will definitely help you with the upcoming tests and future years, so I’d highly advise going to at least one of them.
