“Hollow Knight”, a Metroidvania game, was released in 2017 by a group of developers called Team Cherry. They created a beautiful, interactive world with challenging bosses and platforming. This beautiful game received amazing reviews, so it’s no surprise that everyone was excited when a sequel was announced, “Hollow Knight: Silksong”, in 2019.
Unfortunately, they received complete silence until it was released on Sep. 4, 2025.
It is believed that each year, the hype would get bigger until it was so big that there was no way it could ever live up to it, but I believe it did. So far, “Silksong” has been a beautiful game that is an amazing playing experience.
“Silksong” takes place in a kingdom unfamiliar to Hornet, the “lethal hunter” you play as. Pharloom is a beautiful kingdom full of luscious grottos and cryptic areas, all coexisting in a beautiful way where nothing feels out of place. You’ll explore beautiful grottoes, towns full of life, dark tunnels, and vast abandoned cities. Each creature tells its own story: Bone Bottom, a small town full of friendly pilgrims; Greymoor, a huge corrupted city; The Wormways, a creepy tunnel network filled with bloodthirsty creatures; all made more alive with the beautiful soundtrack in this game. Each area being even more beautiful than the last, leaving you wanting to know: what happened here?
Now, let’s talk about the actual gameplay of “Silksong”. Since you’re a new character, your moveset is different from the predecessor to this game. You still have the same basic swing attack with your weapon, though at a faster speed now, and the first thing different that you’ll notice is her down attack. Instead of swiping downward, she’ll dive downwards diagonally to slam into the heads of her foes. It definitely takes getting used to but, once you get the hang of it, it begins feeling fluent and contributing greatly to the new, more dance-like combat system this game has to offer. As you get new abilities, such as the ability to dash, Hornet will begin to feel even more fun to play as you attempt to master her acrobatic attacks. As you fight enemies or bosses in increasing difficulties, you’ll soon see that her moveset feels less like a fight and more like an intricate dance with blades drawn. Each enemy defeated will leave you with a sense of accomplishment as you feel yourself improving at the game.
With the combination of the exceptional worldbuilding and extremely fun and satisfying new gameplay, Hollow Knight: Silksong does not disappoint. Every new area will leave you charmed and every difficult fight leaving you feeling accomplished. This game is near perfect in my opinion, and is a must-play for fans of the original game or of the genre.
