After a long swim season with countless meets and practices, the Oakmont Vikings are off to sections to end their season.
Lynnmarie Wang, a current freshman on the Oakmont swim team who has qualified to swim in the 200 and the 500 free at high school sections, is excited about sections.
“I’ve been working really hard, and I’m excited to see how it’s going to pay off,” Wang said. “I’m looking forward to seeing what a big high school meet is like, and just hanging out with friends and swimming. [I think] that’s really fun.”
Wang has been swimming since she was six years old, and, although she is very talented in all of the events, claims that her favorites are “freestyle or backstroke.”
Wang’s favorite memory of swimming with Oakmont is “the PVL championships, where [they] all swam really well and the girls won.”
This was a great season for Wang, and the swim team as a whole. Going to sections for the second year in a row is an amazing accomplishment.
Coach Peter, who has coached the swim team for the past two years, has a great feeling about this year’s sections.
“It feels really good,” Peter said. “It’s great to see the kids every day. Because they made sections, they have more time with their friends and more time to swim and get a chance to get even better times.”
Sections is a great chance for those who made it to bond together as a team and with the coaches. Oakmont swim team has three amazing and hardworking coaches who dedicate their time to make a strong team. All of these coaches have swimming backgrounds, which makes them even better coaches.
“I started swimming in a summer club at 10, and then I started year round at 12, and I swam in high school, junior college and division 1,” Peter said.
It is hard to qualify for sections and it takes lots of skill, dedication, and effort from the swimmers. Sadly, this year, the swim team had less swimmers qualify, but it was still a great experience.
“We had 10 girls qualify, and eight are going,” Peter said.
This achievement represents the dedication of the swimmers and the hard work put in all season. They get to celebrate this success and have earned the honor of representing Oakmont in sections. This season had a lot of great memories that will stick with the coaches and swimmers for a long time.
“I think my favorite memory was last year, when we made all the swimmers put on as many pull buoys as possible and try to race each other,” Peter said.
Going to sections is an amazing accomplishment for all sports. Swim team deserves recognition and congratulations for this and all their hard work and accomplishments along the way.
