Here at Oakmont High School, we have students getting ready to take AP and IB tests. This is a stressful time for students in those programs, as they have been working hard all school year and now it’s time to put that knowledge to the test. I interviewed Kate McGinnis and Calista King about their experience in the programs and how they feel about testing.
When I asked McGinnis and King about their AP/IB classes here at Oakmont, they gave me a long list of classes, showing just how busy these students are with their workload.
McGinnis said, “IB Environmental Systems and Societies, I took that last semester, and I’m in IB English and IB history.” . . . “ [last semester she] was in IB Spanish SL-1 and IB Math.”
King said. “I’m taking IB Physics and AP Calc. AB.”
While King and McGinnis are in those advanced classes, they still have normal classes, which add even more to their workload. When I asked them if they were prepared for testing, they answered confident but nervous.
McGinnis said, “Somewhat, yeah. I think I need to study a bit more”.
King said, “Yeah”.
After a long year of hard work, it is time to test their knowledge. Although test season is stressful, McGinnis and King are as prepared as they could be. Within everyone’s long list of classes, everyone has their favorites, and these are McGinnis’s and King’s.
McGinnis said, “[My favorite is] IB English”.
King said, “Probably IB physics”.
These are great programs that have great classes to offer for those looking to advance their knowledge. The IB/AP students are proud of being a part of these great programs and all have their favorite thing about them.
McGinnis said, “I think it will help me prepare for college level classes, because these are college level [courses], so once I go to college, I’ll feel a bit more prepared”.
King said, “The small class sizes, so it’s really kind of personal”.
These programs provide deep connections with their peers and the opportunity to advance and be more prepared for life. Tons of people want to be a part of these advanced classes but we never really know the reason why. Here are McGinnis’s and King’s.
McGinnis said, “I joined IB diploma because I wanted to take the most challenging curriculum. I want to succeed in college and in life, and I think it helped me prepare a lot”.
King said, “I wanted to do IB in elementary school, for some odd reason, which led me here”.
Students are encouraged to challenge their minds here at Oakmont. With that, OHS offers many different programs for those looking to advance their knowledge, get real life experience, and have an advantage when competing against others for things like jobs and getting into schools.
