Granite Bay Jiu-Jitsu is a highly-regarded mixed martial arts gym located in Granite Bay, CA, serving the greater Sacramento and Placer County areas, including Roseville. It was founded by Ryan Rich, a 3rd-degree black belt under Ralph Gracie, whose family was the driving force behind the global spread of this martial art. Granite Bay Jiu-Jitsu (GBJJ) offers classes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Wrestling, and MMA for all ages and skill levels. As a previous 9 year wrestler and a current member of the Granite Bay Jiu-Jitsu academy, I can personally commend this gym for their professionalism, high quality coaching and equipment, and the community as a whole.
I would like to start off by analyzing GBJJ’s exceptional level of professionalism. It’s refreshing to be in a space where everything is kept clean, organized, and running smoothly; that level of care doesn’t go unnoticed. Whether it’s helping members with form, managing equipment, or just being approachable and courteous, the professionalism displayed here consistently makes my experience a great one each and every day.
From the moment I walk in, I’m always greeted with a friendly and welcoming attitude and it’s clear that everyone takes pride in creating a positive and respectful environment. The trainers are not only knowledgeable but also attentive and supportive, always ready to offer guidance or encouragement when needed. The coaches, in particular, are not only highly knowledgeable and supportive, but they also know how to bring just the right amount of humor into their sessions. When it’s appropriate, they manage to make us laugh and keep the energy light, which makes the workouts even more enjoyable. I truly appreciate that they hold themselves at such a high standard—it truly makes a difference.
Next, I want to highlight the extremely high quality of coaches and equipment that this establishment prides itself on. The level of dedication that each and every member possesses is commendable on its own, let alone as a group consistently. I can especially appreciate the coaches and higher belts who consistently show up, lead by example, and offer their time and knowledge so generously.
The coaches, especially coach and founder Rich who personally coaches youth classes, are not only skilled and always demonstrate a professional, educated attitude, but also appear approachable, encouraging, and often bring that sense of humor that keeps training both productive and fun. It feels almost inspiring to train alongside such dedicated individuals who genuinely care about helping others grow and improve.
On top of that, the gym itself is equipped with everything you need to succeed in any martial art. The quality of equipment is top-tier, and it is clear that a lot of thought has gone into creating a space that supports performance, recovery, and safety. To note a couple recovery features, there is the Morozko Ice bath, reaching 72 inches across, that utilizes epsom salt to aid in recovery and an infrared sauna which helps penetrate deeper into the body than normal steam. Furthermore, there are multiple pieces of equipment and technology in regards to safety including an electric spray machine that charges disinfectant liquid with positive ions to eliminate potential hazards, automated Roombas to clean surfaces so nobody steps on anything dangerous, an AED in case of cardiac emergencies, and a FloWater filter with 7x purification that adds electrolytes while served at a 65 degree Fahrenheit constant, preventing the use of thousands of plastic water bottles.
Finally, I would like to express my profound appreciation for the incredible community that exists at this gym. It’s more than just a place to train — it truly feels like a second home. The camaraderie, support, and kindness that everyone shows, from fellow members to seasoned belts and coaches, creates such an uplifting and motivating environment. Whether you’re brand new or have been training for years, you’re welcomed, encouraged, and treated with respect. That kind of community doesn’t happen by accident and it doesn’t happen overnight — it’s built through shared values, consistency, and a genuine desire to help one another grow. I feel grateful every time I step on the mats to be surrounded by such good people.
Although the price may seem steep for many people, any quality mixed martial arts studios are within the same range and the level of instruction, community, and personal development that GBJJ fosters makes it an investment well worth making. I would also like to emphasize their scholarship program that offers either a free membership or significantly reduced prices for those who cannot afford it. This is one of the only gyms that provide these scholarships as this money is made up for by sponsors and generous donations to the gym from families and communities alike.
Overall, I have nothing but positive things to say about Granite Bay Jiu-Jitsu: it truly lives up to its reputation. It’s a place where high-level training meets a supportive, family-friendly atmosphere, offering something valuable for both adults and youth from ages 4-17. Whether you are stepping onto the mats for the first time or looking to refine your skills at a higher level, GBJJ delivers an experience that’s hard to match — and even harder to walk away from.
