Every two years in April, there is a powerful disturbance in the Force. Hundreds of thousands of fans make a pilgrimage to a specific city; the location of the Star Wars Celebration.
A Star Wars Celebration is every “Star Wars” fan’s dream. Guests have opportunities to cosplay, ask questions to its cast and crew members, and get sneak peeks of the next movies and TV shows coming to the “Star Wars” galaxy.
According to the Disney website, Star Wars Celebration 2025 was the biggest in its sixteen years of history, with tickets sold out quickly, and the Tokyo venue packed with more than 100,105 eager fans. It took place in Tokyo from Apr. 18 to Apr. 20.
Ordinary fans weren’t the only attendees. Star Wars Celebrations are known for their celebrity guest appearances. While the usual hosts played a prominent role during the ceremonies—namely Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy, and Jon Favreau—there were also several guest stars working on or revealed to be working on various new projects. These included Hayden Christensen, Rosario Dawson, Diego Luna, and Pedro Pascal.
The celebrity cast also included Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling, who announced that they were working on a new standalone movie, called “Star Wars: Starfighter”. It is set five years after “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” and is expected to premiere on May 28, 2027.
Jon Favreau, acclaimed film and television director and creator of the series “Star Wars: The Mandalorian”, also revealed details about his new film “The Mandalorian and Grogu”. For those who have not seen “The Mandalorian”, the series is about a lone Mandalorian mercenary who stumbles upon an alien infant, named Grogu. “The Mandalorian and Grogu” is an extension of the series and the pair’s journey.
In the television department, Lucasfilm announced a seemingly endless number of exciting new projects, some of them coming to the screen sooner rather than later. Season two of “Light and Magic”, the television documentary series about Lucasfilm’s legendary effects team, is on Disney+ and sees ILM as they navigate a newly digital world, and enter a new era of filmmaking and “Star Wars”.
There were many new animated series announced at the Celebration as well. “Tales of the Underworld”, an anthology series accompanying “Tales of the Jedi and Tales of the Empire”, is coming to Disney+ on May 4, 2025, the same day as Star Wars Day. The series is about Asajj Ventress and Cad Bane, both characters from the series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars”.
An all new animated series involving Sam Witwer, the voice of Maul in “The Clone Wars”, was also announced to be coming to Disney+ in 2026. Called “Maul: Shadow Lord”, the series is about Maul’s exploits after the Clone Wars have ended and he has undergone a transformation from disgraced Sith apprentice to criminal kingpin.
These animated shows will likely be very grim and not for the faint of heart; however, there was also good news for younger kids in the audience. “Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures” is officially in for a third season, the High Republic-era series coming to Disney+ and Disney Jr. in the fall of 2025.
This was only Friday’s Celebration; stay tuned for Episode II, where more surprises and “Star Wars” projects are revealed.
