For the second year in a row, the Health Academy hosted Academic Advantage, sponsored by Placer Oral & Dental Implant Surgery. The founder of this amazing program is Daniel A. Martin. Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry.
Dr. Daniel and his team at Placer Oral & Dental Implant Surgery organized this event and partnered with the Career Technical Education department at the RJUHSD. For Academic Advantage, they bring a group of professionals from different healthcare fields together, talking to students about their journey of getting where they are today and the different paths that are available for that profession.
They also spoke about their daily routines in that profession and what is expected of them in the healthcare field. Along with this, they gave tips on preparing for college and medical school and answered any questions we had.
Now, for the moment you’ve all been waiting for, the people we got to hear from. We had rad tech Brianna Donley, certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) Jose Ramirez, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurse Krista Fassler, associate marriage and family therapist Ben Fontes, and certified operating room nurse/clinical nurse educator Shannon Hall.
Although this event was hosted at Oakmont, it was also open for students from other schools to come. Along with that, the people at Academic Advantage got Chick-fil-A for lunch. After the lunch break, we got to hear from 911 dispatcher Jameson Brown, dentist Colby Smith, hygienist Tiffany Lawrence, and an oral maxillofacial surgeon Daniel Martin.
Hearing from every person was great and really expanded our knowledge on jobs in healthcare. This was a great opportunity to get more of a chance to fully understand certain jobs, and which ones fit my personality and what I am interested in pursuing in the future.
Personally, I liked them all but my top 2 favorites were Fassler, the NICU nurse, and Rameriz, the certified registered nurse anesthetist. I have always known I want to either work with kids and/or babies or be an anesthetist, so getting to hear from professionals from both fields really helps me kind of narrow it down and pick something that fits me and my personality.
This is an amazing event, Placer Oral and Dental Implant Surgery, brought to RJUHSD, and we all hope we see it again next year.
Thank you!
