In the Mar. 2025 Minecraft LIVE, Mojang announced a number of updates, such as “Spring to Life”, which dropped on Mar. 25. They also announced a new update that will be coming later this year, one that expands on Ghasts.
Once this new update arrives, players who venture into the Nether have a chance to find a Dried Ghast. The Dried Ghast is a block found in Soul Sand Valleys, nestled into odd-looking bone structures. It looks to be feeling grumpy and so shriveled up you might think to put water on it.
The problem? There is no water in the Nether. So, players can pick it up, bring it through the portal, and place it in water in the Overworld.
After much time, the Dried Ghast is no longer dry and is now a healthy Ghastling. Unlike how the Dried Ghast looks sad, the Ghastling has a smile on its face. They can imprint on both mobs and players, and follow them around until they get bored and find something new to imprint on.
Ghastlings don’t spit fireballs like the Ghasts do in the Nether. But, you can feed it snowballs to both cool it down and hydrate it.
When they grow into adulthood, they are called Happy Ghasts. Just like the Ghastlings, Happy Ghasts have bright smiles on their faces and are passive mobs, unlike Ghasts from the Nether.
A new, fun feature will come with these Happy Ghasts; the ability to ride them. This will add a new item to the game, a harness, where you can fly around on a Happy Ghast. A fun perk of the harness is that up to four players can ride a Happy Ghast as long as it has a harness.
When mentioning this fact on the livestream, Game Director Agnes Larsson also introduced a coming feature; the Locator Bar. As the name suggests, the Locator Bar will help players find one another on the server.
The exact date for this new update hasn’t been confirmed by Minecraft staff yet, but we have been told to expect this summer to be a Ghast-ly one.
