Yolanda Saldivar, the woman who was responsible for killing Texas Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla Perez, is currently serving life and has recently tried for parole. Yolanda was in charge of Selena’s fan club, shooting and killing Selena on Mar. 31, 1995. The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles denied Saldivar’s request for parole that the offender poses a continuing threat to public safety.
Saldivar shot Selena in a Corpus Christi hotel room, after the singer confronted her for embezzling money from the fan club that Saldivar was President of, and also from Selena’s clothing boutiques.
The singer-songwriter’s husband Chris Pérez and Quintanilla’s family posted a statement stating, “Today, we are grateful that the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles has chosen to deny parole for Yolanda Saldívar.”
The family is happy with the decision Texas Board made stating that “While nothing can bring Selena back, this decision reaffirms that justice continues to stand for the beautiful life that was taken from us and from millions of fans around the world far too soon.”
Yolanda Saldivsr has another parole hearing for Mar. of 2030. The anniversary of Selena’s death was marked on Mar. 31, which makes it 30 years since she passed.
The family stated, “We will continue to celebrate Selena’s life – not the tragedy that took her from us — and we ask that all who cherish her do the same.”
The singer-songwriter is still remembered through her music, movies, murals, and statues. Selena was the first female Tejano artist to win a Grammy in the category as a Mexican-American artist. After her death, the English crossover album she was working on was released it was really successful. Her music is an inspiration to many people and she is a strong role model for Mexican-American youth. She is still remembered to this day and her fan base has expanded over the years to many generations.
Her fans do not want Saldivar to get approved for parole, as they want justice for Selena’s life that was taken so early. Her music will be missed from her fans’ songs like “Dreaming of you” and “Dame un beso”.
Yolanda will be serving a life sentence until approved for parole, which the Texas Board of Pardon and Parole has to approve. Until then, she will remain serving her sentence in the Patrick L. O’Daniel Unit in Gatesville for murder.
