Ever since defining the fighting game genre in 1992 with the release of “Street Fighter 2” by Capcom, the series has been a household name with sequels, comics, and eight different versions of “Street Fighter 2”.
However, as anyone who has tried to learn how to do all the cool stuff they see knows, they can be very hard. “Street Fighter 6” alleviates many of these issues with fresh ideas for the genre.
Revolutionizing Legacy
While there may be single-player modes in fighting games, the star of the show is the one-on-one combat against a real person. However, playing against a real opponent puts all of your skills on trial against theirs. Things such as being able to do your special moves or combos can already be a struggle for newer players, let alone when your opponent has already mastered these.
Capcom has helped to solve this problem that usually walls out new players from playing by introducing modern controls. This special control scheme allows for one-button special moves à la “Super Smash Brothers” as well as automatically performed combos to skip the execution requirements and get into the real game of trying to anticipate what your opponent will do next and punishing them.
Multiplayer
“Street Fighter 6” has the best competitive scene out of any fighting game ever as well as one of the biggest competitive scenes out of any esport today.
The Capcom Cup is an official tournament series focused on Capcom fighting games. The prize for both Capcom Cup X and Capcom Cup 11, the two that focused on “Street Fighter 6”, both had a first place prize of $1,000,000. This was the biggest prize for any fighting game tournament ever.
The game also has some of the best online play out of any modern fighting game on the market. The game utilizes rollback netcode to allow a near perfect connection that feels like you’re playing right next to someone on your couch when they could be on the opposite side of the world.
Single-player
While the primary focus is on the multiplayer aspect, the single-player mode in the game is also great. It has the normal stuff any fighting game would have, such as an arcade mode, training mode, combo trials, etc.
But there is one mode that could be considered a game all on its own. The “World Tour” mode allows you to create your own character and meet iconic characters like Ryu and Chun Li, and learn their moves. This mode received praise from many fans for being such a refreshing take on what a fighting game single-player mode could be. Gone were the days of the cheating computers “Street Fighter 2” and in was an open world beat ‘em up with custom characters.
Final Review
“Street Fighter 6” is a great game for anyone wanting to get into the fighting game genre or for anyone looking for a fun open-world game. The game is normally $60 but regularly goes on sale for $30.
