Zach Bryan’s new songs were an emotional and grounded journey through love and reflection.
Bryan is a singer and songwriter known for his raw and emotional introspective take on country, rock, folk, and Americana. Just recently as of the end of Jan. and mid-Feb., Bryan has released two new songs, “Blue Jean Baby” and “Dear Miss”.
Fans are speculating that Bryan will be releasing a new album sometime this year, as both of the songs have similar covers. Bryan is a very active songwriter and likes to release an album about every year, while most artists put out albums every couple of years.
Both of Bryan’s new songs fall under the country genre as according to Apple Music. These songs do a great job at getting the listener to visualize what Bryan himself is going through as he tells stories throughout these two songs about some sort of relationship or situationship he has had in the past.
“Blue Jean Baby”: A Heartfelt meditation on love and loss
From the opening notes of “Blue Jean Baby”, you can hear a mid-tempo drum beat with some basic acoustic strumming and a soothing, but sorrow-filled electric riff. The song starts off with Bryan singing in a calm state of mind, he occasionally raises his voice for lyrics to exclaim his feelings. These ranges of vocals intertwine perfectly to get the listeners engaged and emotionally vulnerable.
Lyrically, the song reflects on Bryan’s feelings of sadness in the early morning as he recalls the connection he had the previous night with a significant other. He insinuates the feeling of heartbreak and longing for someone while they leave.
“American girls love goodbyes, and I’ve been gettin’ by on Pinin’ for it”. By these lyrics, Bryan is talking about how he’s getting through life by yearning for girls that he cannot have. It’s almost that he needs to feel this way.
After his lyrics about pining for the women that leave him, he talks about his tiredness with lyrics like “I need to rest my eyes, It’s a long way home”. This could hint at his mental tiredness of yearning and chasing after these women.
Overall, “Blue Jean Baby” is a fairly well-written song that goes through the sensation of heartbreak and yearning but also the mental effects of these feelings.
“Dear Miss”: A letter tells a heartbreaking story.
“Dear Miss” starts with a somber soft-sounding guitar riff, this perfectly sets up the aggressive, deep strums that come during the main chorus followed with an underlining bass drum. Bryan suddenly starts the song off with background information, stating that he had left a letter on the desk of his former girlfriend’s mother.
The song most likely got its title from the introductory words written in this letter. In this letter, Bryan is recognizing his wrongdoings and trying to find forgiveness.
In the first line of the chorus, Bryan sings, “Dear Miss, by the time you see this it’ll be in love or it’ll be in pain”. In these lyrics, Bryan is conveying that by the time his former girlfriend’s mother reads this, they will either be in love or they will have broken up.
The song continues with Bryan singing about his faults and how much he loves this woman’s daughter. He talks about how beautiful she is and how she makes him feel. Themes of forgiveness and describing the beauty and love of his prior partner is seen all throughout the middle of the song.
Towards the end of the song, Bryan repeats the chorus “So, Dear Miss, by the time you see this it’ll be in love or it’ll be in vain”. He had changed the word “pain” to “vain” to insinuate the end or death of their relationship.
He ends the song by telling us the daughter’s thoughts about their breakup, describing how the daughter loved the imperfections that Bryan had, even though Bryan had felt like these imperfections were preventing him from having a lasting relationship with her.
“And she’s standin’ in the doorway ramblin’ on about my old ways, how they were reckless and free, how all my imperfections and every ugly lesson is worth every last second with me”.
To conclude, “Dear Miss” is an amazing song that in detail tells a story of love, loss, guilt, and rejection. The song does a great job of getting you to visualize the scenarios in your head while listening to beautiful sounds.
I recommend listening to both of these songs if you like country music, as I think they are beautifully written, not only the lyrics but the sounds and instruments that can get you to tune into your emotions.
