On Tuesday, Mar. 18, Oakmont competed at Bear River High School in the first league meet of the season. Oakmont’s track and field team went to Bear River High School to compete against Bear River, and Center High School.
Our first interview was with Amy Geluk, a sophomore who originally ran in frosh/soph but got moved up to varsity.
“I have a lot of experience running varsity in multiple sports and was excited for the competition, and the competitive nature of the events [regained] my confidence,” Geluk said when asked how she felt about being moved to varsity.
Not only did Geluk get first in all of her events, but she also qualified for the Arcadia meet during the Bear River meet.
“It poses a lot of potential for myself, but I was really excited because I get to go to L.A.,” she said.
Our next interview was with Malachi Alexander, a sophomore who competes in the same events as Amy, only in the varsity boy’ races. Alexander is an incredible runner and knows exactly what to do when competing.
Alexander, like Geluk, is a sophomore who competed in the “110 hurdles, 300 hurdles, 4×4, and 4×1.”
Alexander said his favorite event was “the 4×4 because closing the distance [between the runners] gives aura.”
When asked about his goals for this track season, Alexander said that “[his] goals are to drop into the 14 seconds for the 110 hurdles, and to drastically improve by [his] junior year.”
Our final interview was with Ellie Lawson, a senior who has done track and field all four years.
The events Lawson ran were the 4×8 and 800 and 4×1. Overall, Ellie ran hard and had fun competing in her events.
Lawson said “Valhalla” was her favorite meet, and the “800 and the 1600” were her favorite events.
