Sonoma State University is known for being the only four-year public college in the North Bay. Recently, the Sonoma State University budget cuts are endangering the future of student enrollment, with cuts to the tuition and fee revenue.
SSU announced their cut offs during late January, letting their students and the world know.
They announced that the school was going to stop funding athletic programs.
They also announced that they were going to have six departments closed down, ending 23 major degree programs and master programs. This included women and gender studies, philosophy, theater arts, and art history.
Sonoma State University is facing a budget deficit that has grown to almost 24 million dollars. They even started doing staff layoffs.
Sonoma State University is considered a great university, as it is ranked #24 out of 118 Regional Universities West. To be able to get into this college, the average GPA is 3.4.
Hundreds of students, parents, and community members expressed frustration at the town hall. They believed it was unfair to cut an entire program. The people felt like they were not being heard about it, and felt that they weren’t answering their questions.
John Collins, a member of the Philosophy department, said that after this semester he was going to be out of this job. Collins didn’t like the fact that town hall was virtual, and he also expressed that it was like talking to a brick wall.
