Oakmont High School hosted a Mock Admissions Night for the junior class and their families on Tuesday, March 18th at 6pm in the auditorium.
The Mock Admission Night allows the junior class to get a better understanding of how to apply for colleges in the future. There was a presentation with 7 college representatives: Seton Hall, University of Las Vegas, Oregon State, University of Oregon, University of Tennessee, Southern Methodist University, and Worcester Polytechnic Ins.
The college representatives proceeded to enlighten the junior class on the merits of their university;
I attended the junior Mock Admissions Night and here is how it went.
At 6:30 we broke out into rooms based on last name to review the mock admissions documents. Participants were given 3 different mock applicants, who were all applying to Lake Washington University.
We reviewed each part of the applicant process as a group: their transcript, personal essays, teacher recommendations, profile, education, and other activities. We then had to decide as a group if a person should be denied admission, admitted, or waitlisted based on their college applications.
The purpose of this was to show us the differences between each of the applicants’ college admissions process.
The most valuable thing I got out of the night was about the personal statements. The college representatives spoke a lot about making sure that our statements were different from our essays and that we were not just repeating the same thing twice.
The personal statement should go out to all the different colleges you are applying to. However, your essay should be written specifically for each college you are applying to.
My overall feeling is that this event was very useful to me as a junior. I recommend that the upcoming juniors attend this night when the time comes. It gave me a sense of comfort and peace on how to apply to colleges in the future.
Applying no longer feels so stressful.
