The varsity boys soccer team had their Senior Night which took place on Jan. 29th at 6:30 pm.
According to MaxPreps, Oakmont varsity standings were 5 wins, 5 ties, and 5 losses. They battled against Wheatland High School on their senior night and beat them 2-1.
The seniors on the team are Ben Valentine, Teak Barbour, Jairo Lira, Erik Salazar, Mark Ramirez, Hayden Torgerson, Angel Mejia, Franco Viero, Tobi Obazee, Jose Hernandez, and Jose Castillo. The coach of Oakmont High School Boys varsity soccer is Pete Gonzales.
Hernandez plays right back. We asked him how he felt about scoring for the first time, and the win on Senior Night.
“It was a very special night, especially for my Senior Night. I never thought [I would score] my first goal, but it was a special moment,” Hernandez said.
We asked Teak Barbour to respond about how Oakmont soccer has impacted him over the last four years.
“It gave me something to look forward to at school, and it has given me many friendships with a whole lot of people,” Barbour said.
We also asked Barbour how he felt about scoring the winning goal, especially on Senior Night.
“[It felt] amazing, knowing it was my last home game and I could make a difference in the team and get a victory,” Barbour said.
The last senior we interviewed was Tobi Obazee. We asked him what advice he would give to younger players on the team.
“Work as hard as you can, don’t skip practice,” replied Obazee.
A younger player and the team captain, Marcus Vasquez, reflects on the positive impacts the senior teammates have made on the team. Vasquez’s favorite memories involved the camaraderie at team meals before the games.
“[They] inspired me to be a better player, [and] encourage other younger players,” Vasquez said.
Overall, the varsity boys soccer team said farewell to their senior players of the Oakmont class of 2025.
