The Roakville winter program is a co-led program joined together with Oakmont’s music director, Samuel Elmore, and Roseville’s music director, Micheal Austin. It is held together by Shawn Corpman, the percussion caption head.
Winter percussion is a competitive activity, similar to marching band. It features the drumline and the pit, a group of keyboard instruments such as the synth, marimba, and xylophone, as well as a bunch of instruments that are too heavy to march with.
It combines the musicality and performance of a marching band but in an indoor space, as well as a much smaller group without the wind instruments.
In addition, there is a second winter program run by those two directors called winter guard, which is the same premise of taking the color guard from the marching band and putting it into an indoor space. They only march flags and rifles in Roakville. Last year, they played ‘‘Me and Your Mama” by Childish Gambino for their show.
Roseville and Oakmont have regularly combined bands to do the aforementioned program. Last year, they won 1st place in every single division, sweeping the competition. That show was about a city flooded with toxic chemicals that slowly took over their performers. The year before that, they won sweepstakes in their end-of-the-year championship competition. That show was about puppets breaking free from the control of their masters.
Roakville is in anticipation as their new show will be revealed on Nov. 9 for an informational night to educate people about the program. Anyone is welcome to join and it is highly encouraged for new members of all levels. The informational night will be Nov. 18 at 6-6:30 pm in the Roseville High School band room.
This is an exciting year for Roakville as a majority of the players are seniors performing their last high school shows.
