During P.E. on Oct. 8, an event was hosted by the National Guard to educate students on what it’s like to be a part of the National Guard, called Mission Day. It held multiple simulations, including a night vision rescue simulation, firefighting, and more.
There were a total of six activities and simulations available. There was the night vision rescue, a biohazard collection race, the firefighter uniform race, a VR simulation of firefighting and CPR, and a pushup test to win prizes.
The night vision simulation required an individual and three other people to go into a series of tunnels and find a dummy. You tie a line around the dummy and drag him out. The mission is completed when you take the dummy behind the series of tunnels. The goal is to get the best time.
The biohazard collection race revolved around one person and up to two other people putting objects into a bag with a grabber and getting sprayed down. The first to get all members of their team sprayed off wins.
The firefighter uniform race requires you to go against two people to see who can put on the uniform correctly the fastest. First you had to put on the pants, then the boots, the jacket, and finally the hat. The first person to reach the hat wins.
VR firefighting puts you in a forest during an active wildfire. Your goal here is to get as many points as possible. You received points by extinguishing the fire and conserving it as much as possible.
A CPR simulation was also available, with the objective being keeping your patient alive. You could also earn some free gear by doing pushups. After doing a certain amount in one session, you could claim a shirt or tank top and a flag.
Overall, Mission Day was a fun event and a great way to teach the students a lot about the role of some of the most important emergency responders: firefighters.
