Lady Gaga is also a singer and songwriter, with over 117 awards from 246 nominations, and is one of the world’s best selling music artists. Gaga is the only female artist to achieve four singles that each sold at least 10 million copies globally. Her rise to fame started in 2009, with her singles “Just Dance” and “Poker Face”.
On Aug. 16, this unexpected duo released “Die With a Smile”, which peaked at the number 3 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Despite its 3rd place on the charts, the song has become #1 across all social media platforms.
The song’s beautiful message and the duo’s exceptional vocals make it one of the top songs of the year. Not only is it the vocals and message that makes it so great, but also the captivating music video that grabs the attention of millions of fans around the world.
The two singers are seen matching in blue and red retro-style western outfits. The music video opened with Gaga at the piano, while Mars played the guitar. Their matching looks nod to the 1960s duet performances on the Grand Ole Opry stage, where Dolly Parton and Porter Wagoner used to perform. Both often incorporated classic Western elements like cowboy hats, boots, and bolo ties into their outfits.
A duet between Gaga and Mars was always going to generate a lot of interest upon release, as they have never worked on a song together before, let alone their very different genres of music. However, it is clear that the pair coincided beautifully, as the song reached the top of both the Spotify Daily Top Songs USA and the real-time Apple Music charts.
Nevertheless, “Die With a Smile” has broken the internet and is one of the most played songs across all platforms, with almost 97.2 million streams in just 21 days. If things keep going well for Mars and Gaga, this song might just be a nominee for song of the year at the 2024 Grammys.
