Who was Jason?

Jason Voorhees is the main antagonist of the “Friday the 13th” franchise, and the secondary antagonist of the crossover film “Freddy vs. Jason.” He was a near-silent, undead, and a mostly unstoppable killing machine.

Jason was a madman who haunted Camp Crystal Lake. He was sent to brutally murder anyone he encountered out of a need to avenge the death of his mother, Pamela Voorhees.

Jason Voorhees has killed over 200 people throughout this franchise.

What was “Friday the 13th?”

On June 13, 1979, camp counselor Annie Phillips is driving to the newly re-opened Camp Crystal Lake after it was shut down roughly 20 years prior. While driving, Enos, a truck driver taking her toward the camp, warns Annie about the camp’s horrific past. He begins telling her how the unfortunate events started when a young boy drowned in Crystal Lake in 1957.

After being dropped off by Enos, she hitches another ride from an anonymous person, who drove her past where she was supposed to be dropped off. Annie fights to escape the vehicle, only to have her throat slashed after she tries to make a run for it.

Taking us to the camp, counselors Jack, Ned, Marcie, Bill, Brenda, and Alice, accompanied by the owner Steve Christy, fixed up the cabins and main areas of the camp. A thunderstorm approached, and Steve left the grounds to grab supplies. Ned saw someone walk into a cabin and followed, and his nosiness eventually got him killed.

While Jack and Marcie spend time together in the cabin, they are unaware of Ned’s body also being in the room with them, with his throat having been slit. When Marcie left Jack alone to use the bathroom, Jack’s throat was pierced with an arrow from under the bed he was laying on. The killer followed Marcie to the bathroom and impaled her face with an ax.

When Brenda entered a cabin to sleep, she heard a little boy’s voice calling for help and left to go outside to the archery range.

Alice and Bill realized they hadn’t heard a word from any of their friends, and left the main cabin to investigate. They find the bloodied ax in Brenda’s bed, phones disconnected, and Ned’s truck unable to work. Later, Steve finally returned and recognized the killer, who stabbed him to death.

When the power went out, Bill went to check the generator. Alice left to look for him and found his body pinned with arrows to the door of the generator room. She ran to the main cabin to hide, and instead witnessed Brenda’s body being thrown through the window.

Alice then saw a vehicle pull up and ran outside, as she thought it was Steve. She is instead seen by Mrs. Voorhees, who claimed to be an old friend of Steve and his family.

She told Alice that her son, Jason, was the boy who drowned years ago, and pinned his death on the fact that the counselors ignored him. She then exposed herself as the killer, and attempted to kill Alice, but Alice knocked her unconscious.

Mrs. Voorhees woke up and tried to kill Alice again with a machete, but Alice took the advantage when she was out of breath and decapitated her.

Alice then boards and falls asleep inside a canoe that floats out on Crystal Lake. Suddenly, Jason’s corpse drags her into the lake, and she wakes up in a hospital surrounded by police and medical staff.

Alice learned that Jason was never found, meaning he was going to come back.

How successful was “Friday the 13th?”

The success of the original “Friday the 13th” movie led to eight sequels and led Jason to become a Halloween costume favorite and a pop culture icon. The movies have grossed more than $216 million at the box office, with “Freddy vs. Jason” earning the most profit.

My Review

This movie is an enjoyable slasher you can never go wrong with. Although, Mrs. Voorhees was possibly the worst horror movie character I have ever seen: she’s annoying and she took all the attention away from Jason. She was a nicely written character – it was written so nicely that I wanted to rip my hair out every time she came on screen. All I can say is that I am incredibly happy that Alice decapitated her at the end of the movie. She is a woman nobody ever wants to see in sequels of classic movies.

I enjoyed the first movie a lot, but of course as with many slasher sequels, the series went downhill, with “Freddy vs. Jason” being the most confusing crossover I have ever seen. Despite this, Jason Voorhees himself is one of the most known slashers in the horror category.
