The shootings first started when the 15-year-old suspect Austin Thompson shot his 16-year-old brother James Thompson. According to Raleigh’s police chief, the shootings left five dead.

Police found Thompson two miles away from where his brother was shot and stabbed. One police officer was injured when exchanging shots with the suspect. The officer was sent to the hospital and released later that night.

Thompson was arrested after a four-hour-manhunt on Oct. 13,  having one gunshot wound from an unknown source. Police also found a handgun in his waistband, a shotgun and shells from the shotgun lying on the floor near him, and a hunting knife at the front of the outbuilding.

According to the local prosecutor, Thompson will be charged as an adult and not a youth. He had a backpack that contained multiple types of rifles and shotgun ammunition.

The report also stated that at 5:09 p.m., emergency communications were called for multiple gun shots shot near the neighborhood’s golf course. Another person called 911 a couple of minutes later, reporting they heard gunshots and saw two victims on the ground in front of a house.

Thompson is believed to have also shot 60-year-old Marcille Lynn Gardner, who they found wounded on the driveway. He then fired at 52-year-old Nicole Connors, who they found on the porch. Connors did die later, but Gardner still remains hospitalized.

Afterwards, the police found another police officer who was off-duty in his car. Officer Gabriel Torres, who was 29 years old, was about to leave for work when Thompson shot him. Torres was later pronounced dead in the hospital.

After Thompson fled the scene, he went towards the Neuse River Greenway Trail, where only a few minutes later, a 911 caller found two victims who were dead. 34-year-old Mary Marshall was shot when she was walking her dog, and 49-year-old Susan Karnatz was shot while she was on a run.

Chief Estella Patterson reported that the motives for the attacks are still unknown.

An hour after the shots were fired, the police found Thompson in a two-barn-like structure. According to the report, when shots were fired back and forth, the officers estimated 23 rounds of shots fired; however, two of the city officers were placed on administrative leave due to discharging their firearms.

Earlier in the week, the parents did make a statement saying they are “overcome with grief and didn’t see any signs or knew that Austin was capable of this.” The Associated Press doesn’t typically name people under 18 who are accused of crimes, however his parents voluntarily named him.
