Ask Week is a two-week-long competition that gives students the opportunity to ask a chosen person to Homecoming in an elaborate way, usually involving a big poster.

From Sept. 26 to Oct. 7, students sent in their ask pictures to @theoakmontway on Instagram. The couple with the most likes received two free Homecoming tickets.

Junior Marcus Castillo asked his long time crush, Peyton Cook, to Homecoming with the help of a Crumbl Cookies themed poster.

Marcus Castillo asking Peyton Cook to the Homecoming dance with the help of a poster.

“Her nickname among our friend group is cookie,” Castillo said. “I chose to get her cookies, so it was the whole theme of the poster.”

This, however, took some planning. Making a large poster was no small feat.

“I made it myself,” Castillo said. “[But] I had my mom draw the number two.”

The motivations behind an ask can sometimes just be friendly, but in other cases relationships can blossom from a Homecoming ask.

“I’ve liked this person for a very long time,” Castillo said. “I just felt like this was the first step to [showing that].”

Cook reported that she was surprised and had no idea that this grand gesture was going to happen. She ended up agreeing to the date and could not be happier.

The winners of the competition were sophomores Elaine Wreschinsky and Nicholas Radican.

Radican had asked Wreschinsky on a mini golf date and hid an Ask Week poster inside the Golfland building. Later he surprised his date with the poster that asked “Are you sick of playing singles? Would you want to play doubles with me at hoco?”

The poster referenced tennis since Wreschinsky plays on Oakmont’s tennis team. Radican says that he asked her because he liked her and “wanted a hoco date.”

After accepting the invitation to homecoming, Wreschinsky was ecstatic.

“I was very flattered,” Wreschinsky said. “I couldn’t stop smiling.”

Wreschinsky had her doubts about winning while Radican was confident that they would take the victory.

Overall, students who participated in Ask Week got dates to the homecoming dance and the opportunity of having their ask seen by all who visit Oakmont’s Instagram page.
