A protest against police brutality on May 26, 2020 after the death of George Floyd.

May

Much like in April, there were not many moments that defined the month. Many schools finished the 2019-2020 school year online, which many did not anticipate to occur. Many high school seniors graduated virtually, including at Oakmont. Many families continued to stay at home as much as possible in order to lower the risk of contracting COVID-19.

On May 25, 2020, a 46-year-old black man, George Floyd, was killed in Minneapolis, Minnesota while being arrested after allegedly using a counterfeit $20 bill. White police officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes, and was filmed by bystanders. Floyd’s death sparked protests throughout the United States and caused the Black Lives Matter movement to increase in popularity.
