How Jhené Aiko’s music has grown throughout the years

Throughout the years, alternative R&B singer, Jhené Aiko, has definitely improved within her music style. Aiko began making music at 15 years old to being successful at 32 years old. With five of her own albums, it’s safe to say that she has grown as an artist within the music industry.

Aiko began making music in 2003 when she was only 15 years old. Her first song, “No L.O.V.E”, had its own music video. In “No L.O.V.E.,” she explains how her significant other is susceptible to possibly cheating and hiding secrets from her, which is why he shouldn’t receive any type of love from her.

Her first mixtape, “Sailing Soul(s),” was released in 2011 and had 13 of her own songs that she wrote, as well as the song “July.” She began working on it after she had her daughter, Namiko. This album had significance to her due to the fact she was going through many hardships in life, especially after giving birth to her baby. This mixtape included songs such as “Higher,” “Growing Apart Too,” and “Sailing NOT Selling.”

In 2013, Aiko released an EP named, “Sail Out.” This EP included six tracks, some of which featured artists such as Kendrick Lamar and Childish Gambino. Her song, “The Worst,” talks about how the person who she used to love and deeply cared about, hurt her. Throughout this EP, she includes music that deals with heartbreak and life lessons.

Her second album, “Souled Out,” is practically her way of showing significant growth from “Sailing Soul(s)” to now. “Souled Out” includes 12 tracks such as “Wading,” “Promises,” and “Brave.” In this album, genres of R&B, hip hop, and psychedelic music are incorporated. This album has shown a development of a girl once heartbroken and now being able to find love within herself. 

Another album made by Aiko is “Trip.” This album takes on a psychedelic story through her progress of life lessons such as love and death. Sadly, her brother passed away, which took a huge toll on her. Since writing is one of her main passions, she used it to cope with the passing. This album includes songs such as “While We’re Young,” “Moments,” and “Sing To Me.” 

Aiko’s most recent album is “Chilombo,” which is named after her surname. On this album, there are 20 tracks, including  some features with Miguel, Ty Dolla $ign, and Future. Within this album, every song incorporates sound healing from crystal alchemy singing bowls. The album includes songs such as “None of Your Concern,” “Triggered,” and “Pray for You.”

Throughout the years of producing music, Aiko has definitely shown growth within herself, her relationships and music. Many of her fans are grateful for how she changed many people’s lives just through her music.
