“The Trial of Lizzie Borden” by Cara Robertson is easily one of the best historical true crime stories. This book particularly focuses on the feelings of youngest daughter Lizzie towards her parents, which she hid behind a soft smile.
The novel does not hold back vast details in explaining the events leading up to the murder, as well as the outcome of the trial regarding Lizzie and the entire Borden family. As the story continues, Cara Roberston speaks of the true monster of emotions which consumed Lizzie Borden and the horrific actions she forced upon her father and stepmother.
Throughout the novel, Robertson adds in parts of interviews and trial descriptions to truly show the effect of how this crime affected not only the Borden family, but also those who lived in their town of Fall River, Massachusetts. These actions would continue to impact not only Lizzie, but also her sister, Emma, for the rest of their lives subconsciously.
From start to finish, Cara Roberston writes this true crime story in a way which captivates the readers and draws surprise and disbelief of what occurs. This type of page-turning story-telling method was successful through not only the writing itself, but also historical pictures that go along with the events being discussed.
This true crime novel covers a horrific murder of the Borden parents and may not be for the faint of heart as it is brought to life and is convincing enough to have taken place closer to present times. Cara Robertson explains the graphic crime in a variety of ways in which the events occured along with the confusing and unjust trial. Due to these vast details and pictured images, this book may not be fitting for some readers.
Readers who tend to draw closer to historical events, true crime, and surprise would enjoy every aspect of this novel. Not only is this story true crime, but it also made its way to being international news at the time of its occurrence.
All in all, “The Trial of Lizzie Borden” by Cara Robertson is the perfect book for readers who enjoy twisted and suspenseful historical events filled with murder and lack of justice. Not only is this book addicting, but it also creates an environment which can make one feel as though the trial is happening in current times and allows for readers to make their own predictions about what truly happened the night of the murders.
