Morgan McFarland has been attending Oakmont since she was a freshman. As this school year has been different for everybody, including Morgan, she is still trying to adjust to the new online school system.

She is one of many students that have encountered new and unusual challenges with online school this year.

“Since I am taking all AP and IB classes this semester it’s hard not to  be able to interact with lessons and be engaged, and make more topics interesting,” McFarland said

McFarland misses the normalcy and hands-on experience of classes, which is something that can’t be done over Zoom.

“My favorite class is IB Biology, but I miss being able to do labs in class and change what we do every day, instead of just lectures,” McFarland said. “That class is the most interesting to me, and is one of the only classes I have where we [are] engaged and ask [questions] as if we were still in class to make it a lot more interesting.”

This has been an unusual year to say the least, and it is nowhere close to how school years of the past have been due to the pandemic. However, McFarland sees it with resignation as she knows it’s the best course of action and nothing else can be done.

“Obviously my senior year is nowhere how I imagined it, so there are a lot of things that I do not like about it compared to junior year, but there isn’t much that can be done to change that,” McFarland said.

Of course no one knows what is in sight for the future, whether we will be online or we will be back to school as normal next semester. However, McFarland is staying optimistic about the future.

“I am just hoping that when we go back next semester, it’s a five-day schedule, and that we still have events that make school actually fun, like rallies,” McFarland said.
