COVID-19 should not affect the celebration of Halloween

An opinion for Halloween 2020

Halloween should not be cancelled this year just because of the effects of COVID-19.

It’s that time of year again when we start to wonder who or what we want to be for Halloween. But the question is, should Halloween still happen this year because of COVID-19?

I personally think that we should still have Halloween this year, because we all need some form of normalcy in our lives. Especially with all of the negativity in our world right now, we could utilize Halloween as a way to enjoy ourselves and have a positive distraction.

With that in mind, we should still be using masks as often as possible and be social distancing.

Instead of knocking on our neighbors doors, people can sit by the door with it open and put a bowl of candy six feet away from where they are sitting (for social distancing). This way, people are still enjoying the experience of trick or treating and the bowl of candy is still being supervised, assuming that a person may take the entire quantity of candy.

I completely understand that many do not want to go out because of COVID-19.  Those who don’t can stay inside and turn off their porch light as a way to show that they will not be participating this year. However, those who do want to celebrate Halloween, should still feel that they have the desire to go out.

I’m not saying that we should all go out, not wear masks and be less than six feet away from another person. Right now, I feel that we are in need of something that is familiar and as normal as possible while still taking as many safety precautions as possible.

2020 so far has had a great deal of events that we will all remember for the rest of our lives. Halloween should be one of those events, still being celebrated this year to bring some semblance of holidays this year, but all precautions should still be used to limit exposures to COVID-19.
