Oakmont’s own rapper, Roderick Martin, also known as James Droptop, is known for his music. He started rapping because he loves to create things. Whether it’s rap, poetry, or art, he loves to tell a story.

“My name is James Droptop because it sounds fun and very ear catching,” Martin said. “You’ll remember it.”

He plans on sticking to rap after high school.

“Mainly just creating and music is my life goal,” Martin said. “I have plenty of goals and plans set up for the future.”

On October 7, Martin released an EP called “A Place of Shade” with six tracks. He claims to have about 3,000 streams already and his goal is to have 50,000 by the end of the year.

Martin said his inspiration for his new EP came from making his music under a tree on a small hill and thus the title,  “A Place of Shade.”

Though he said he didn’t have a favorite song on the EP,  he said that he loves all of them the same and he thinks of them as a cohesive set of favorites.

“So all of them have a little story, and all of them display a part of my personality that I want to develop on,” Martin said.

His most popular song, “CGI” has  2,235 streams on Soundcloud and 1.523 on spotify as of October 22nd.

“I wrote it out, the whole theme is just kind of like traveling through space,” Martin said.

His fans can expect more creative content from James Droptop in the near future.

“I have a bunch of ideas for videos and I already have some done,” Martin said.
