Sonia Lane is beginning her first year of teaching Spanish 3 and 4 at Oakmont.

Mrs. Lane is from Zaragoza, Spain and has enjoyed a fulfilling teaching career in both Spain and the United States.

“I have always wanted to be a teacher,” Spanish language teacher Mrs. Lane said. “When I had my oldest daughter, I decided to go back to school one more time to get my teaching credentials, and I’ve been working in the United States as a teacher for five years now.”

She began her career in 2001 when she earned a BS in business, as well as a major in economics from both University of Spain and Hogeschool in Amsterdam, Holland. She also earned her teaching degree with a specialization in world language in 2006 from University of Alcala in Madrid, Spain. She later earned her teaching credentials in California.

Prior to Oakmont, she taught in both Europe and the United States through Montessori programs, intercity public schools, private schools, and advanced programs.

“In Spain, I taught math, arts, English, and science,” Mrs. Lane said. “But here, I have always taught Spanish and English for students learning English.

Mrs. Lane initially took an interest in teaching at Oakmont because her daughter was interested in pursuing IB classes. However, she has quickly grown fond of the various levels of Spanish classes that the school offers.

“I’m excited to teach anything,” Mrs. Lane said. “I like to try new things and I like to learn. I wouldn’t mind teaching native Spanish, or I would also love to be trained to teach IB Spanish.”
